A series of three books on the photographer, Anton Corbijn, focusing on his work with musicians. The first book features his music video work, the second features conversations and essays with the musicians Corbijn collaborates with, and the last book is of his photos taken of musicians.
When I began this project, I was quite familiar with Anton Corbijn's photographs, but I knew much less about his music videos. Through the process of researching this project, I fell completely in love with Corbijn's music videos. Some of them are very similar to his photographs visually, but they are often much more strange and wonderful, full of surreal moments that I now think of as his signature. These moments make his videos a joy to rewatch, and I loved getting to highlight some of them in this book.
The books I have of Anton Corbijn's work all feature his own handwritten commentary, which gives great insight into his own process and personality. Since this set of books was meant to be more about collaboration, I chose to use conversations and essays with the musicians he works with as the text instead of his own thoughts alone. Having the text in a separate book allowed me to focus on the imagery alone in the other two books.
I was already quite familiar with Anton Corbijn's photographs, and have always appreciated the way he is able to capture the personality of the people he photographs. While his music videos give much more insight into his own personality and thought process, his photos of musicians feel comfortable and intimate. I was happy with the way these three books show how that collaboration works, what is revealed in each form.
